Hair Oil vs Hair Serum: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Use?

Hair Oil vs Hair Serum: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Use?

Many people use the two words as if they mean the same thing. They do not.

Hair oil

A richer product, usually applied to the scalp and lengths before washing. It is for massage, nourishment and pre-wash care. Examples: Amla & Rosemary Hair Oil.

Hair serum

A lighter leave-in product, applied after washing, mainly to control frizz and add shine. See Rosemary Hair Serum.

Using both

Oil once or twice a week, serum on wash days. Start with two drops of serum. Read our oiling guide for the method.

How to decide

Think about when and why you reach for the bottle. If you want to nourish and massage before a wash, use oil. If you want to tame flyaways or add shine on dry hair, use serum.

  • Pre-wash: oil.
  • After wash: serum on the ends.
  • Day-to-day frizz: a drop of serum.
  • Night: a light oil massage if you like.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not apply heavy oil right before going out. And do not use serum on the scalp unless the label says you can.

Frequently asked questions

Can serum replace oil?

Not really. They do different jobs.

Should I put serum on my scalp?

Only if the product is made for the scalp.

What if my hair looks greasy after serum?

You used too much. Try one or two drops.

Quick takeaway

Use oil before washing for care, and a few drops of serum after for shine and frizz control.
